Blue Car/Plane/Boat Baby Quilt

made 3/17/2009
Puppy Quilt

Quilt Panel

This is the first quilt I made after the birth of my first baby, who was about 16 months old at the time. Needless to say, I needed a a quick and easy shortcut. I wasn't really looking for one when I when fabric shopping, but heaven was on my side, and I discovered quilt panels. They are sheets of patchwork already stitched together for you. So, no need to sew squares and strips together. They are few and far between, but they are out there. I wanted to make a quilt for a new baby boy, so I found a perfect blue car/plane/boat panel all ready to go. It was about $25 dollars for the panel.

Embroidery

As usual, my husband machine-embroidered the baby's name on the quilt panel, before we did the batting sandwich.

Applique

Can you believe that the car, boat, and plane appliques were already sewn onto the panel? So I didn't even have to do this. Thank God, because cute quilt appliques are getting harder to find.

Binding

I still love satin binding for babies. So I bought some prepackaged satin blanket binding and quickly sewed that around the quilt after making the sandwich.

Stippling

No fancy stippling this time, just tracing around the little cars in the center. Time was a rare commodity, as I only had 1 weekend to finish this.

Quilting

As I mentioned above, I just sewed a little around the cars in the middle of the quilt to give it a little character. Then I stitched around the squares to give them a little poof.

Back

Nothing fancy on the back. Just picked out some cute baby print and called it good.
